What it’s like
Founded in 1851, originally as a small boarding school for the sons of Clergy,
it moved to its present site in 1872. A very pleasant campus on the edge of
Leatherhead, it comprises 50 acres of delightful grounds dominated by the
handsome late-Victorian buildings. There have been many modern additions
providing excellent facilities and accommodation, most recently a sixth form
girls' house and a performing arts centre. Although the school looks for all-rounders,
the aim is for academic excellence and examination results are good. It is a C
of E foundation with a lively chapel life that supports the strong pastoral
framework of the house system; attendance at worship is both compulsory and
encouraged. The music, drama and art departments are very active and many pupils
are involved in theatrical presentations each year. The school has a
long-standing reputation for achievement in games and sports, and games are held
5 days a week. There is substantial commitment to local community schemes, an
outstanding record in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme and CCF.

Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Age range 13–18; 445 pupils, 303 day (280 boys, 23 girls), 142
boarding (116 boys, 26 girls).
Entrance: Main entry ages 13 and 16. Common Entrance and own tests used;
for sixth-form entry, 6 GCSEs at least grade C (4 at grade B or higher in
sixth-form subjects). School looks for all-rounders; C of E school but all other
religions accepted. Very few state school entrants at 13, 1–2 to sixth form.
Scholarships, bursaries & extras Up to 32 pa scholarships, value
10%–50% fees: 12 academic, 10 all-rounder, 5 art, 5 music (20 at 13, 12 at 16).
Foundationerships for children of Anglican clergy. Parents expected to buy
textbooks (often available secondhand).
Head & staff
Headmaster: Nicholas Haddock, in post 2004. Educated at St Edward's
School, Oxford, and at Oxford University (geography). Previously Housemaster at
Cranleigh. Also Officer in the Royal Green Jackets; FRGS.
Teaching staff: 50 full time; 2 part time plus 12 music. Average age 35.
Exam results
GCSE: On average, 80 pupils in Year 11, 84% gained at least grade C in 8+
subjects, 13% in 5–7 subjects. Average GCSE score 57 (55 over 5 years).
A-levels: 100 in upper sixth, 5% passed in 4 subjects, 93% in 3 subjects.
Average final point score achieved by upper sixth formers 316.
University & college entrance 90% of sixth-form leavers go on to a
degree course, 5% to Oxbridge. Others typically go on to art or drama courses or
other non-degree courses.
Curriculum GCSE, AS and A-levels. 25 subjects offered.
Sixth form: 21% take science A-levels; 60% arts/humanities; 19% both. No
A-level general studies.
Vocational: Work experience available.
Special provision: Special classes for dyslexic pupils.
Languages: French, German and Spanish offered to GCSE, AS and A-level.
Regular exchanges to France, Germany and Spain.
ICT: Taught both as a discrete subject (2 lessons/week) and across the
curriculum. 300+ computers for pupil use (10 hours/day), most networked and with
e-mail and internet access.
The arts
Music: Up to 25% of pupils learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams
can be taken. Some 4 musical groups: orchestra, wind band, brass group, jazz.
Drama: Some are involved in school productions and majority in other
productions.
Art & design: On average, 27 take GCSE, 14 A-level. Pottery also offered.
Sport & activities
Sport: Major sports are rugby, soccer, cricket, netball, hockey. Minor:
athletics, swimming, golf, fencing, sailing, volleyball, lacrosse, tennis,
shooting, rounders, badminton, basketball, table tennis, fives, karate.
Activities: Pupils take bronze, silver and gold Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award. CCF or Duke of Edinburgh compulsory for 4 terms at age 14+. Community
service optional. Up to 10 clubs, eg theatre (including regular West End
visits), Christian Union, etc.
School life
Uniform: School uniform worn; upper sixth may wear own suit.
Houses & prefects: Competitive houses. Prefects, head of school
(appointed by Headmaster); head of houses and house prefects (by housemasters).
Religion: Attendance at chapel compulsory; full involvement encouraged.
Social: Sixth-form club; debates, music, discussion groups, occasional
dances, charity rock concerts and annual conference on industry and business
management. Organised trips/exchanges to France, Germany, Spain and America;
sports tour to eg West Indies, Czech Republic, Fiji; field trips to Europe,
North Africa. Upper sixth allowed to bring own car to school; others, bikes.
Meals, cafeteria style. School shop. No tobacco or alcohol allowed.
Discipline Pupils failing to produce homework, do it in detention.
Anyone caught smoking cannabis would be expelled.
Boarding Senior pupils have own study bedroom, juniors in dormitories
of 3–6. Houses of 55–65. Resident qualified nurse. Central dining room. Pupils
can provide and cook their own food. Weekly exeats. Daily visits to local town
allowed (juniors with permission, seniors on trust).
