What it’s like
Founded in 1842 and run under the direction of the Society of Jesus, which has
had a presence at Spinkhill from 1580. The school lies in the village and has a
fine estate of playing fields and farmland. Originally a boys’ school, girls
have been admitted as pupils since 1977. Most pupils are Roman Catholics but
other denominations are welcome. There is strong emphasis on religious
instruction. It has a good staff:pupil ratio of about 1:8 and examination
results are good. There are strong music, drama and art departments.
Considerable strength in sport and games with many county representatives in
rugby. A very good variety of clubs and societies. About a quarter of the pupils
are involved in local community services.

Pupils & entrance
Pupils: Age range 11–18; 321 pupils, 202 day (132 boys, 70 girls),
119 boarding (75 boys, 44 girls).
Entrance: Main entry ages 11, 13 and 16. Own entrance exam used (English,
maths and IQ tests); for sixth-form entry, 5 GCSEs at least grade C. Sport and
music skills looked for. 30+% of intake from own prep school, Barlborough Hall
School (enquiries to the Headteacher, Barlborough Hall School, Barlborough,
Chesterfield).
Scholarships, bursaries & extras 7 pa scholarships, value £100–£2100:
6 academic and 1 all-rounder (2 at 11, 3 at 13 and 2 at 16). Variable number of
means-tested bursaries, including to scholarship holders if needed. Parents do
not buy textbooks.
Parents 15+% are doctors, lawyers, etc; 25+% in industry or commerce;
10+% in the armed services. 50+% live within 30 miles; up to 20% live overseas.
Head & staff
Headmaster: Philip MacDonald, in post from 1998. Educated at Oxford
University (classics). Previously Deputy Head at Marist School, Ascot, and
Director of Studies at Douai.
Teaching staff: 34 full time, 9 part time. Annual turnover 3%. Average
age 36.
Exam results
GCSE: In 2003, 30 pupils in fifth: 84% gained at least grade C in 5+
subjects. Average GCSE score 55 (51 over 5 years).
A-levels: 27 in upper sixth: 20% passed in 4+ subjects; 74% in 3; 6% in 2
subjects. Average final point score achieved by upper sixth formers 308.
University & college entrance 96% of sixth-form leavers go on to a
degree course (15% after a gap year), 7% go to Oxbridge. 10% take courses in
medicine, dentistry & veterinary science, 30% in science & engineering, 10% in
law, 30% in humanities & social sciences, 10% in art & design, 20% in other
vocational subjects eg leisure, sports. Others typically go on to business or
other employment.
Curriculum GCSE, AS and A-levels. 18 GCSE subjects offered; 20 at
A-level (including sports studies, design technology and A-level general
studies). 20% take science A-levels; 40% arts/humanities; 40% both.
Vocational: Work experience available.
Special provision: Specialist teaching for dyslexia and EAL.
Languages: French and Spanish offered to GCSE, AS and A-level. Regular
exchanges to Spain (Barcelona) and France (schools in Lille and Nancy).
ICT: Taught both as a discrete subject (2 lessons a week) and across the
curriculum. 37 computers for pupil use (10 hours a day), all networked and with
email and internet access.
The arts
Music: All pupils in first year have musical tuition and 40% of pupils
learn a musical instrument; instrumental exams can be taken. Musical groups
including 4 choirs, orchestra, brass band, string club and guitar groups.
Drama: Some pupils are involved in school and house/other productions.
Art & design: On average, 20 take GCSE, 4 AS-level, 6 A-level. Design
also offered.
Sport & activities
Sport: Rugby, cricket, hockey, netball compulsory. Optional: athletics,
rounders, tennis. Fifth and sixth form only: badminton, fencing, swimming, table
tennis. GCSE and A-level sport studies may be taken. More than 20 boys represent
county at rugby, 6 represent region, 1 – England.
Activities: CCF compulsory for 1 year at age 15, community service at 17.
Up to 30 clubs, eg many minor sports, fencing, weight-training, aerobics etc,
chess, bridge, TV & video, radio, astronomy.
School life
Uniform: School uniform worn except in sixth form.
Houses & prefects: Competitive houses. Prefects, head boy/head girl, head
of house and house prefects, appointed by the Headmaster.
Religion: Compulsory mass for all boarders on Sundays. Other
denominations welcomed. Daily mass voluntary. Retreat programme for all years.
Social: No organised local events. Exchanges with Jesuit schools in
Australia, Zimbabwe and France. Day pupils allowed to bring own
car/bike/motorbike to school. Meals self-service. School shop. No tobacco or
alcohol allowed.
Discipline Strong emphasis throughout the school on growth to
self-discipline.
Boarding Sixth form have own study bedrooms; remainder in en-suite
rooms for 2, 3 or 4. Single-sex houses of 50+ for third and sixth years
inclusive. Resident SRN. Central refectory. Visits to local town allowed for
upper school.
